Well its been a beautiful day today!  Been looking forward to a day like that for ages.

Last week I was pricking out Coriander and today I have been pricking out Basil.

I have to say that despite the fact that I have a diploma in Herbal Medicine, I have not really studied the medicinal benefits of everyday culinary herbs.

These are the kind of herbs that are perfect for their flavour but are often overlooked for their medicinal properties.

I am really surprised that that Basil has so much in the way of anti-inflammorty powers.  It is all to do with the essential oil that it contains called eugenol.  This is just one of many compounds in basil such as , citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene and terpineol.

Eugenol is particulary helpful in alleviating the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions.

The oils in basil have been found to be effective inhibitors against Staphylococcus, Enterococci, Shigella and Pseudomonas.

I know that for one I will try to use it on more of a daily basis.

This week I will be planting out some sage.  I wonder what delights that holds!!

Have a good week everyone!
